Abstract:
|
Accessing social media via a public API (application public interface) allows researchers to quickly gather large amounts of data. This allows much larger scale data collection than was previously practical, especially for language and social network structure data. However, data collection from social media comes with a unique set of challenges and considerations. This talk will use the Twitter API as an example and showcase some of the strengths and weaknesses of Twitter as a data collection platform. It will also discuss the rights and responsibilities of researchers towards the social media data they collect, with a focus on ethical considerations.
