Title: Data Science + Social Science: Using Data Science to Track Arrest-Related Deaths in the US
Author(s): Duren Banks* and Peter Baumgartner and Michael G. Planty
Companies: RTI International and RTI International and RTI International
Keywords: Justice; Police; Machine learning; Media review
Abstract:

Prior federal efforts to track the number of arrest-related deaths in the United States through traditional survey and voluntary reporting methods resulted in significant undercoverage. The Bureau of Justice Statistics partnered with data scientists and social scientists at RTI International to develop and test innovative methods to develop a more comprehensive data collection, including harvesting existing open information sources, applying machine learning classifiers, and follow-up with law enforcement agencies. This presentation will describe the methods, findings, and recommendations from the resulting Arrest-related Deaths Program pilot study.
