Title: Soft Skills for Effective Collaborations and Communications
Author(s): Nancy Ann Bates*
Companies: US Census Bureau
Keywords: Communication; Negotiation; Collaboration
Abstract:

The speaker will discuss the importance of "soft skills" when it comes to a successful collaboration between academe and government agencies. Such skills include communication, negotiation, and the establishment of liaisons. Communication is crucial to alert and promote the academic skill sets available to agencies, advertise the outcomes of successful collaborations to the broader federal statistical research community, and managing expectations from both parties. Negotiation is critical to gain access to titled datasets, time commitments from managers and highly desired agency personnel, and promoting understanding of real-world constraints that come with deeply entrenched production systems. Nancy will use examples over the National Science Foundation/Census Research Network lifecycle to illustrate the importance of these soft skills as well as some lessons-learned.
