Abstract:

In this roundtable, I will discuss the current status of the biostatistical community in aging and dementia research in the US and the world, and the major statistical challenges facing the scientific community. The focus will be on the types of longitudinal databases from typical Centers on Aging (COA) or Alzheimer Disease Research Centers (ADRC) or clinical trials on Alzheimer disease across the world including neuroimaging data, molecular biomarker data, clinical and cognitive data, and neuropathological and genetic data, as well as the cutting-edge scientific questions that I think statisticians can truly help to address. I will discuss ways to get involved in these studies and methods to access their databases. I will also discuss the possible career path for statisticians who are looking for specific directions, and present why statistics in aging and dementia research is a very attractive and rewarding route of our profession. Finally, I will share my experience as the director of Biostatistics Core for several NIH-funded aging and dementia projects.
