What was there before PRIM9, Xgobi, DataDesk and all that we call early examples of dynamic and interactive graphics? The origins of all of this, as well as the cinema, and computer animated films ("Toy Story") can be traced to scientific questions about the nature of human and animal motion.
As technology developed, the study of motion for its own sake, and the visualization of motion progressed from a pleasurable pastime to the huge industries of Hollywood and Netflix. Over time, these developments also found important scientific applications in aerodynamics (the wind tunnel), medical imaging (blood flow in the heart and brain), neuropsychology (fMRI recordings), ecology (migratory patterns of birds) among others. In this talk, I illustrate some important landmarks in the prehistory that led to modern uses of these methods in data analysis.
