Abstract:

Among behavioral and social scientists, awareness of methodological challenges in causal investigations is higher than ever. This roundtable discussion will be organized around the presenter's research monograph with the above title published by Wiley in July 2015. The book clarifies for applied researchers the theoretical concepts of moderated effects, mediated effects, and spill-over effects. These questions are of key interest in evaluating interventions designed to improve outcomes for participants embedded in social settings. The presenter will provide an overview of the book, highlighting features of innovative weighting strategies and corresponding software programs for investigating these causal effects and comparing them with other existing analytic methods. While highlighting the crucial role of good research designs, a major emphasis is placed on explicating and evaluating the assumptions required for relating causal parameters of interest to empirical data. A discussion will then be devoted to cutting-edge topics, including investigations of complex mediation mechanisms, heterogeneous mechanisms, and mechanisms involving spill-over in multisite trials.
