Abstract:

There is no concept of odds ratio in higher order contingency tables. When examining association between Asthma and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, we are inundated with 2x3 contingency tables with rows marked by the presence and absence of disease and columns by genotypes. We need a concept analogous to the odds ratio that can characterize independence of disease and a specific Single Nucleotide Polymorphism. We bring into service the singular value decomposition of a matrix closely related to the 2x3 contingency table under focus. One of the singular values of the decomposition serves our need. We examine properties of singular values both mathematical and statistical. Applications are outlined in association studies and Population Genetics.
