Abstract:

Respondents to the Federal Reserve Board's Survey of Consumers' Use of Mobile Financial Services ("Mobile Survey") have been asked to gauge whether they have used mobile banking or mobile payments in the preceding 12 months based on general descriptions of these mobile financial services. Responses to those questions provide a measure over time of how usage has changed. However, the proportions of respondents reporting that they use mobile banking or mobile payments based on the general questions are lower than the proportions reporting that they engage in specific banking or payment activities. This suggests that actual usage may be somewhat higher than the general questions would indicate, and may indicate that more specific questions about particular activities may prompt respondents to recall their activities or possibly to think about them in a different way. This paper examines patterns of response among Mobile Survey respondents and discusses the challenges of defining and measuring mobile banking and payment activities as technologies continue to emerge and evolve and as respondents move from exploration to adoption of new ways of using technology.
