Abstract:

Kobe Bryant announced at the beginning of the 2015-2016 NBA season that his twentieth season as a pro would be his last. Now is a good time to look at how his performance has changed over his entire career. One way to model these changes is to look for changepoints using the fused lasso. Once we identify where his performance has gone up or down, as fans we are free to speculate what caused the changes (age, personnel, injuries, etc.). We will also consider an example with LeBron James and look at a modification of the fused lasso that allows us to compare the careers of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
