Title: Writing for Scientific Publication
Author(s): Ingegerd Jansson*
Companies: Statistics Sweden
Keywords: scientific writing ; peer review ; publication
Abstract:

What does it take to write for scientific publication? In the academic world, writing for peer-reviewed journals is a well-established way to share, discuss, and receive feedback on results and ideas. In addition, the peer-review process is a valuable experience for everyone involved-authors, reviewers, and editors. However, outside academia, writing for publication or engaging in peer review is not necessarily recognized as part of daily working life. We will discuss how style, presentation, and organization of results matter; the differences between writing a government report, proceedings for a conference, and a scientific paper; how to present results so they are interesting to a wider audience; how to choose the most appropriate journal as the outlet for one's research; what peer review includes and the formalities one needs to be aware of when submitting to a scientific journal; what kind of support is needed for less-experienced writers; and how the more experienced can help. Participants are encouraged to take an active part in the discussion by sharing their own experiences, questions, and thoughts.
