Abstract:

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will not gather any data until 2022, but urgent work is ongoing to accurately simulate LSST-like data in order to build and test the analysis pipelines that will translate the massive data sets into the promised bounty of scientific information. One challenge is to simulate realistic samples of emission spectra of galaxies. It is well understood how to simulate the smooth galaxy continuum, but lacking are models to relate this continuum to the crucial, sharp emission lines that dominate the spectra. This talk will explore our work on modelling this relationship using currently-available training sets.
