Abstract:

According to the study "Economic and Health Benefits of Bicycling in Iowa," published by the University of Northern Iowa in 2011, bicycling adds more than $400 million in economic activity to Iowa and had a projected health care savings of $87 million. And these are just the economic benefits for one state with a smaller population. There are also the ecological, personal, and community benefits to consider as well. To encourage bicycling, we are using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's General Estimates System (GES) to find circumstances that increase fatalities or serious injuries in accidents involving bicyclists and cars Specifically we are considering features that bicyclists might control or be aware of such as types of intersections and spatial relationship to intersections. Logistic regressions models will be fit to quantify the relationships. This information will provide bicyclists with environmental factors to consider for their own safety, and perhaps give useful insights to infrastructure planners as well.
