Abstract:

As the field of data science continues to grow in size and breadth of application, there must be increasing focus around the implications of the ethical and unethical treatment of data, statistical findings and corresponding decision-making. As consultants, our own reputation, our relationships with our clients, and our clients' reputations depend on the ethical treatment of both inputs (data) and outputs (modeling, predictions, reporting) of the analytics solutions we provide. Even when the inputs and outputs pass ethical judgment, we must still be vigilant to ensure our clients use them ethically in their decision-making. This session will discuss a core set of ethical principles that consultants can incorporate into their practice in order to maintain their professionalism, strengthen their relationship with clients and enable clients to make sound and principled decisions. These principles will be illustrated through real-world examples, highlighting cases where the application of data science ethics went right and where it went wrong. The session will also provide the participants with resources for learning more about ethics in the context of data science consulting.
