Abstract:

Studies on bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) therapy in ischemic stroke have shown inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of BMSC stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke in randomized controlled animal trials. Relevant studies published through November 2015 were identified through database searches of MEDLINE and EMBASE and manual searching. Study selection and Data abstraction were conducted independently by two investigators using a standardized protocol; disagreements were resolved by discussion. 32 studies met inclusion criteria. Cochran Q statistic and Higgins index were used to assess heterogeneity. Each study was weighted by the reciprocal of its variance to estimate the overall effect size. Random effects models were used for pooled analysis due to heterogeneity. Overall, BMSC therapy significantly decreased total infarction volume (standardized mean difference, 0.897; 95% CI, 0.553-1.241; P< .001), increased modified Neurological Severity Score (2.47; 95% CI, 1.84- 3.11) at follow-up. The estimate was consistent in sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses. This meta-analysis demonstrated that BMSC therapy may be a benefit to stroke repair.
