Statistical tolerance intervals are often used during design verification or process validation. They have been employed in diverse applications, such as the manufacturing of medical devices, the construction of nuclear reactors, and the development of protective armor for the military. Normal tolerance intervals are, perhaps, the most commonly-employed parametric tolerance intervals and are also the subject of standard 16269-6 published by the International Standardization Organization. The half-width of a normal tolerance interval is controlled by a quantity called the k-factor, which is a function of the sample size and the user-specified confidence and content levels. There is often practical interest in how the k-factor, sample size, confidence level, and content level each change when specifying the other three quantities. This talk presents a type of operating characteristic curve that can be used to assess these quantities for planning purposes. The calculations will be performed using the R package "tolerance."
