In July 2015, the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) was host to an unusual form of interactive workshop. Modeled on NSF's "Ideas Lab" concept, we invited 34 (mostly) young researchers with backgrounds in statistics, mathematics and biomedical sciences, to spend a week learning each others' subjects and formulating new collaborative research projects. By the end of the week, twelve draft proposals had been written for subsequent submission to a joint NSF/NIH funding competition. This talk will provide an introduction to the workshop, describing the scientific objectives and how we went about organizing it, as a preliminary to four technical talks by workshop participants.
