Abstract:

Past stated choice experiments provide clear evidence that profile ordering within choice sets impacts the choice probabilities. It is important to understand the reasons for such patterns and to account for them both in the design and analysis. This presentation: 1) reviews lessons from the literature and past studies familiar to the authors; 2) proposes methodology for designing surveys where the possibility of order bias is minimized; 3) suggests both design and analysis strategies for accounting for the influence of profile ordering, which results in improved part-worth estimates.
