Title: Problems with P-Value Reform: Who Can We Blame?
Author(s): Regina Nuzzo*
Companies: Gallaudet University
Keywords: p-value ; p-values ; media ; reform ; policy ; education
Abstract:

No other statistic elicits such passionate opinions among such a broad audience -- the media as well as scientists, journal editors, students and even experts -- as the p-value. Why is the p-value such a lightning rod for controversy and misunderstanding? Why is reform around p-values and null hypothesis significance testing so fraught with difficulty? This talk will discuss the unique challenges in understanding and communicating the ideas contained within the p-value, how journalism and social media can hurt as well as help, and what factors need to be in place before meaningful progress is possible.
