Abstract #318518
Title: Gender Realities in Cyberspace
Author(s): Susmita Datta*
Companies: University of Florida
Keywords: Cyberspace ; Gender ; Women
Abstract:

Like many other young professionals I didn't pay attention to the "gender issue" at all for a long time. However, after staying in the academic profession for a while I started thinking about this retrospectively. Should we really not pay attention to the gender discrimination? Unfortunately, existing data do not suggest that. Undoubtedly, we have made significant progress regarding the status of women in our profession. However, subtler and subconscious biases that affect regular working women (not the chosen ones) to reach to their fullest potential still exist. We must identify and acknowledge them in order to make further progress. I will discuss the current status of gender realities in cyberspace. I will then discuss about possible solutions to improve the status of women in cyberspace by creating a positive environment for women to share their voices online. It is my hope that a data driven, pragmatic, non-confrontational and proactive leadership will empower the status of professional women.
