Abstract:

Inferring physical properties of solar and stellar atmospheres from high quality spectral data requires an understanding of complex atomic processes. However, analyses typically ignore uncertainties in the parameters of models of these atomic processes. We present a framework for including such uncertainty in a coherent statistical analysis without introducing excessive computational demands. Our framework allows us to simultaneously perform separate and joint analyses of multiple datasets, enabling efficient diagnostics of the stability of our conclusions across datasets. Moreover, we can quantify the amount of information each dataset provides about the underlying atomic processes. Our framework is designed to accommodate multi-stage analyses with each stage performed by possibly different teams with different expertise. We apply our method to observations collected by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer aboard the Hinode satellite.
