Abstract:

For many years we statisticians have honed our communication skills. Universities have established student seminars to prepare students for speaking in the real world. Government and industry have contracted programs to teach statisticians (and other scientists) how to speak to non-technical types. But this is not enough. It's not what we say that will carry the message. Even, of more concern, it may not be what they hear that is sufficient to make the point. Rather, in our integrated, layered forms of business, it may well be what they said they heard that counts. To make that work requires extra efforts that are discussed in the paper.
