Abstract

As scientific problems become increasingly complex, it is often necessary to form remote multidisciplinary teams of scientists who collaborate - across buildings on the same campus or across the globe - to solve such problems. Realizing the importance of collaboration, and knowing that not all scientific teams are equally effective or successful, NIH recently published the document "Collaboration & Team Science: A Field Guide" (Bennett LM, Gadlin H, Levine-Finley S, 2010). This guidance discusses critical factors in successful collaboration including: building trust, shared vision, communication, sharing of recognition and credit, and conflict resolution. Our panel will extend the guidance by exploring what makes remote multidisciplinary team relationships healthy and productive, and what makes the resulting science powerful and exceptional. Panelists who are highly successful in remote team research, some of whom have written on these issues for a new book (Golbeck AL, Olkin I and Gel YR, eds. Leadership and Women in Statistics, Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, 2016), will discuss how applied statisticians and biostatisticians can effectively lead and facilitate remote team success.
