Abstract:

Precision medicine tailors disease prevention and treatment to individuals based on genetics, microbiome, environment and lifestyle. Human gut microbiome plays an important role in metabolism by generating certain metabolites, which can alter the susceptibility of many diseases. It is therefore important to incorporate gut microbiome measures in order to improve precision medicine. In this talk, I will discuss the problem of integrative analysis of treatment, microbiome and metabolomics in predicting the treatment outcome of pediatric Crohn's disease. We present a general mediation analysis framework to stratify the patients based on their microbiome composition and metabolomics data and show its effectiveness in predicting the treatment outcome. We demonstrate these ideas by a detailed analysis of a study on various treatments of pediatric Crohn's disease.
