Abstract:

More than ever, university statistics departments recognize the importance of educating statisticians in the art of statistical collaboration. University statistical consulting courses and collaborative experiences are now key components in the statistics curriculum for both graduate and undergraduate statisticians. Well-designed statistical consulting courses and carefully selected internship experiences allow students to integrate statistical concepts discussed in previous coursework with the nontechnical aspects of statistical consulting to better meet the challenges of statistical collaboration.

Statistical consulting courses, internships, and research projects pave the way for statistics graduates to have successful careers as statistical collaborators, with researchers, managers, engineers and others, using statistical methods to solve challenging data-centric problems. In this panel session, statisticians who have demonstrated excellence in providing statistical consulting in research and business settings, describe how they help prepare their students to be effective collaborators.
