Title: From the Sun Setting of a Statistics Major to the Implementation of a Business Analytics Major
Author(s): Scott Toney*
Companies: University of Denver
Keywords: Analytics ; Business ; Major ; Undergraduate ; Devlopement ; Redesign
Abstract:

What does it take to "fix" a struggling statistics program in a business school setting? And let's be clear here, by struggling, I mean we were down to 4 Statistics majors. How about a yearlong hiatus, a bold redesign, and a relaunch as a Business Analytics major. This talk will touch on where we were (a Department of Statistics and a Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce) and where we ended up (a Department of Business Information & Analytics). The talk will cover how we balance Statistical content, Information Technology content, and Business School content. Some details will include what it takes to teach in our department, what we expect our students to learn, how our programs aligns (and does not align) with various curriculum guidelines, and what our students end up doing after graduation. The talk will also touch on how we asses student learning and the place of a capstone in our program.
