Abstract:

Sentiments as the recent call for banning p-values by the editors of a noted scientific journal continue to frustrate statisticians. While these controversies typically surface around a specific statistical concept such as p-values, it is only a symptom of a larger problem between the statistics and the scientific/business communities that often includes communication gaps and distrust. Statisticians, as the masters of the extraordinary power, have an obligation to the discipline of statistics as well as to the fields of application to promote statistical best practices while discouraging misuse and abuse that come from poor understanding. This panel discussion will address key underlying challenges facing the statisticians and the statistical profession as a whole, and what we must do to foster better collaboration with non-statisticians.
