Abstract:

Statistics, like any other tools, requires critical thinking training to identifying improper use and to question assumptions and presented facts. Training given to VA personnel included the book "How to Lie with Statistics", which resulted in its ban by the Secretary of the VA. I will address the use of this text in its proper context within the VA. I will also address the unnecessary encroachment on academic freedom in the university classroom by a senior federal official, and its resulting impact. Should exploring the ways statistics can be misused be discouraged, even to the point of being banned, or is that a path to continued ignorance?
