Abstract:

The media is obsessed with controversy because the public is obsessed with controversy. There are major issues in science that are statistical in nature and that scientists do not understand. In a real sense, most scientists do not understand the scientific method. How's that for engendering controversy! Whether journalists appreciate science or not they can be exploited by statisticians to publicize scientific folly. I'll give examples. Two of my focuses will be irreproducible research and misinterpretations of p-values.
