Abstract:

No single approach nor person can create a leader. Hard work, dedication to the field of study and determination are the fundamentals, the rest comes as a consequence. Oftentimes just sheer perseverance provides the impetus to the top. However, taking part in professional activities is inevitable for and important to a successful and satisfactory career. In particular, for a Statistician, participating in a professional organization can (1) open your eyes to new ways of thinking (2) keep you on top of new developments and advances in the field (3) help you to learn of unique experiences that you would otherwise not come upon, (4) over time, provide and foster the confidence needed to participate and lead, and (5) provide actual leadership opportunities. In this talk I provide information for Statisticians at each career level. I hope convincingly to show you that even for those who claim they are not 'joiners', or those who think they save money by not joining, that maintaining membership in a professional organization is a major advantage, even possibly an essential element, for any Statistician.
