Women have played key roles in the leadership of Federal Statistics over the last 75 years. Today statistics are used to measure all aspects of modern society; and the need for statistical leaders is larger than ever before. This paper draws upon a chapter that was prepared for the 2015 book Leadership and Women in Statistics. The paper starts with an overview of the leadership structure in the U.S. Federal statistical system. The leadership views of the five women who led statistical agencies in the winter of 2014 are discussed, along with a brief review of the gender distribution of women in senior leadership positions across the Federal statistical system. Leadership is multifaceted--awareness of policy issues, interagency cooperation, measurement issues, data collection, HR, broadening audiences, changing governmentwide policies. These facets provide different examples of how women statisticians can best position themselves to help solve our nation's challenges. The journeys of five female statistical leaders are highlighted to demonstrate these various facets of leadership, with a focus on lessons learned about leadership in the process of doing the research for the chapter.
