Abstract:

The presence of correlation in a hierarchical structure occurs at each level of the data. There are a variety of methods available for measuring this intraclass correlation; however these methods are usually used to address the correlation at the lowest level of the structure. More so, existing techniques are also rarely directly applicable to the analysis of dichotomous outcomes. In this study, a three-level nested logistic regression model with random and fixed effects at each level is fit. The random effects are used to account for the intraclass correlation at each level. We provide tests at each level to determine when this dependency needs to be taken into account and when it can be ignored. We conduct a simulation study to establish thresholds for evaluating these associations.
