We live in twenty first century age of big data. With hundreds of millions of people spending countless hours on social media to connect, communicate, share and interact, social network has become one unique source of big data. The pervasive use of social network has generated unprecedented amounts of social data. Social media provides easily an accessible platform for users to share information. Mining social media has its potential to extract actionable patterns that can be beneficial for business, users, and consumers. Social media data are vast, noisy, unstructured, and dynamic in nature, and thus novel challenges arise. Thus, new methods are needed to mine the data. In this talk, I will provide a state-of-art review of current available techniques while providing a critical perspective on applications of social network analysis and mining also known as Social Media Mining (SMM).
