Abstract:
|
In 2011, the Committee of the Presidents of the Statistical Societies (COPSS) established a committee to review the model used by the Centers for Medical Services to publicly reporting hospital-specific mortality rates through its Hospital Compare website. The model was considered controversial by some and the COPSS committee reviewed its structure and assumptions, and assessed some alternative ways to analyze mortality data and report the results by individual hospitals. The committee's report supported the general approach of CMS and provided a careful rationale for its use and potential improvements. This presentation will introduce the statistical issue and describe some of the key components of the COPSS report.
