Abstract:

Currently, a SAS programming class is offered at UNMC in a traditional classroom setting in a computer lab and an asynchronous online format. We have available videos of the course for the online format, which include lecture and SAS demonstrations for each topic. We believed that it would be beneficial to combine the two methods of instruction to allow more time for interaction and discussion during class. For one class session of the traditional class, we experimented with a "flipped" class idea, where students were assigned to watch the videos developed for the online class prior to the class session. During the class session in class exercises and more extensive discussion were used as an alternative to the time usually spent on lectures. Students could jump right in with the experiential learning as they came prepared with the basic knowledge gained through the video lecture. After the activity, students were asked to provide feedback in the form of a brief survey on the effectiveness of both the video lectures and the in class exercises and discussion. The development of the flipped class activity, the students' assessment, and future directions are discussed in this session.
