Abstract:
|
This roundtable overviews changepoint issues in environmental data. Changepoints are ubiquitous features in environmental data, and can occur whenever recording stations relocate, new laws are passed, or data observers or gauges are changed. Ignoring the effects of changepoints can produce spurious conclusions. The problem is shown to occur in temperature, hurricane count, and carbon dioxide records. Some statistics are proposed to detect a single mean shift in simple settings. The need for multiple changepoints is noted, as is the role of metadata in making changepoint existence conclusions.
