Abstract:
|
The survivor average causal effect (SACE) has been proposed as the solution to the problem of censoring by death. While the SACE is an interesting parameter, it does not fully capture the notion of the effect of treatment on a measured outcome in the presence of censoring by death and is not identified without additional untestable assumptions even in well-conducted experiments. Further, sole attention to it can lead to paradoxical conclusions and inappropriate decisions. We demonstrate these point with simple numerical examples. We then propose a feasible alternative approach less subject to these drawbacks.
