Abstract:
|
The Excellence in Statistical Reporting Award (ESRA) was initiated by the ASA in 2004 with the hope of promoting and encouraging good reporting of empirical studies in the media. I will describe some of the truly excellent works of the previous awardees, indicating their impact on the reputations of statistics and statisticians. Would that all such reporting be of this caliber! I will address difficulties that statisticians have in working with the less-than-excellent media and suggest strategies for dealing with the media that maximize our influence on public opinion and public policies.
