Abstract:
|
Substantial challenges exist for interdisciplinary statistical researchers when it comes to performance evaluation, promotion and tenure application. The extra effort needed to highlight creative or original statistical contributions to interdisciplinary research works, often conducted by a relatively large number of authors, can be discouraging. This panel session will discuss common challenges encountered across academic institutions that are relevant to promotion considerations, including the following: (i) Reduced research productivity while training oneself and students in new disciplines; (ii) Lack of appreciation for unfamiliar, non-statistical journals, or for non-traditional research output such as software development; (iii) Multiple and sometimes conflicting expectations when holding joint appointments; and (iv) Higher service demands including grant reviews, refereeing, consulting, and supervision/training of non-statistics graduate students. Strategies for successful promotion that showcase appropriately one's interdisciplinary research contributions, as well as views on necessary institutional changes, will be offered and solicited.
