Teaching statistics online to healthcare students through asynchronous courses in a large graduate nursing program is both a challenge and an opportunity. The key to how we fit into the "grander scheme" is this year's JSM theme, Statistics: An All Encompassing Discipline. The healthcare profession today is embracing the concept of evidenced-based practice. Utilizing evidenced-based practice means practitioners provide high quality patient care based on research and knowledge. We as statisticians must guide students to the realization that statistics is essential to achieve this. To encourage learners to recognize the value of statistics in their own practice, beginning statistical concepts covered in class are entwined with brief healthcare applications. Assigned activities will be discussed, such as tapping into the internet to critique statistics used in articles and preparing a slide
