Abstract:
|
Recently there is a demand to make a face-to-face course, Statistical Methods in Clinical Trials, into a fully-online course in our institution. In doing so, we face challenges in (1) online learning technology; (2) interactions; (3) learning quality assessment and (4) student motivation. We introduce a learning experience in dealing with these challenges through the design and implementation of a web-hybrid course. While all course materials are posted online, students are required to sit together with fellow students and the TA in the computer lab for half of the lectures. In the lab, they listen to the online lecture notes for the first 90 minutes, and then participate in a 60 minutes Q & A discussion section led by the instructor. Online classroom forum and synchronous chat are also made available to the students. Students are surveyed twice for their evaluations, opinions and suggestions to the course materials. We show that the web-hybrid course is an effective way for a smooth transition from traditional face-to-face class to a fully online course that retains the education quality while providing the flexibility of asynchronous learning to students.
