Abstract:
|
Good decision making should be based on all relevant information. For designed experiments, this suggests the combined usage of the data from the actual experiment and other relevant information. The formal incorporation of the latter, contextual information can be achieved via the prior distribution in the Bayesian approach.
In clinical trials, the use of historical data is attractive, ambitious, and ambiguous. If well done, the potential gain in information when incorporating historical data can be substantial. However, various practical and methodological aspects need to be considered when one wants to make good use of historical data. Some of these aspects will be discussed, and recommendations will be provided.
