Abstract:
|
Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) are intended to enhance the ability of States to efficiently and accurately manage, analyze, and use longitudinal education data, including individual student records. Since 2005, 41 states and the District of Columbia have received grants to develop SLDS, currently in varying stages of completion.
State Educational Agencies (SEAs) are extremely diverse in their resources and expertise to conduct research and/or allow external researchers to use their data. Providing external researchers access to SLDS data can be non-trivial and resource intensive for the agency; however, several SEAs and other agencies can and do provide data to external researchers in compliance with confidentiality laws. We discuss approaches and barriers to maximizing the use of SLDS data improve educational outcomes.
