The Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS) first started sampling in the Yukon Territory in 1991 with some earlier attempts made on a trial basis. Over time, the sample design has expanded to include Northwest Territories and Nunavut in conjunction with other household surveys conducted by Statistics Canada. The low population and vast land areas in the territories require alternate approaches from what has been implemented for the provinces. Of particular concern is the rate of use of the available sample. During the past two decades, there have been a number of sample design updates and coverage improvements in the North to improve the data quality of the survey estimates.
