Abstract:

President Obama's Open Government Initiative outlined a new direction for the federal government to improve access to Federal data. It also supported the goal to expand the creative use of those data by encouraging innovative ideas and research. The Data.gov website is an important tool for coordinating the release of Federal data to the public. However, the collection of many datasets across federal agencies in a centralized location may increase the risk of disclosing the identity of participants in surveys. In addition, there are concerns that the cross-government cataloging and searching of data sets along with the development of related application programming interfaces associated with Data.gov may facilitate identifying relationships that may not otherwise be apparent.
