Abstract:
|
The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) is dedicated to strengthening and serving the national statistics community, most notably by catalyzing community members' participation in applied research driven by challenges facing government and industry. NISS and SAMSI (the NSF-funded Statistics and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute) work in conjunction with each other to provide an affiliate program with members from the three sectors of academia, industry and governmental organizations. The affiliate program offers researchers from participating organizations important opportunities for shaping and participating in the activities of both institutes, and for interaction with other participants. This structure and the resulting relationships foster cross-sector research activities stimulated by and addressing important scientific and technological problems. Some of the activities, benefits, challenges and results from the affiliate program will be discussed.
