The role of statistical analysis in the financial service industry has changed dramatically due to ever increasing data availability. Capital One was founded on the belief that the power of information, technology and testing could be combined to bring highly customized financial products directly to consumers. Statistical analysts play important roles in influencing its decision-making. We will examine how statistics help financial companies like Capital One to make better decisions and describe the skills needed to excel in the job, which skills are usually learned in school and which need to be developed as a professional. We will share opinions of professionals statisticians and their clients, and examine the career path of data professionals in the financial industry.
