Abstract:
|
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has been commissioned to provide two reports to Congress describing national standards for systematic reviews of clinical effectiveness and for clinical practice guidelines. These standards will be implemented in research commissioned and directed by the new Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). PCORI will identify research priorities and establish and carry out research and evidence synthesis to advance the quality and relevance of evidence for making informed decisions about health care. Among its goals will be promotion of methods research, identification of appropriate peer review designed to avoid bias and conflicts of interest, and interaction with and information feedback to the public. This talk will describe IOM's suggested standards and their potential use by PCORI to ensure stakeholder input, minimize bias and obtain feedback in the context of increasing interest in the role of systematic reviews and guidelines for facilitating improvements in health care.
