Abstract:

Sports data are often large, complex, and extremely motivating to students. Moreover, the sporting world generates many interesting questions which can be answered using sound principles of statistical reasoning. Having said that, in sports, as in many other fields, statistics is often misused and misunderstood. Doing sports statistics is far from an abstract exercise, since many students bring a high degree of subject-matter expertise, as well as an intuitive understanding of confounding. Furthermore, since quantitative analysis in sports has become a serious research field, with many professional teams employing statisticians, students become aware of opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The panelists, each of whom does research in sports statistics and uses sports data in teaching, will discuss and illustrate how sports data can be used to introduce and develop statistical concepts.
