Abstract:

In the field of epidemiology, if and when statistical significance levels should be adjusted for multiple comparisons is still being debated. Arguments for not performing multiple comparisons adjustment include 1) Multiple comparisons adjustments are calculated based on how many tests are to be considered, and that number has been defined arbitrarily: 2) Multiple comparisons adjustments increase the chance of making type II errors. The author argues that it depends on whether it is an exploratory study or a confirmatory study, and in a confirmatory study, what are the claims being made based on the observed data. A guideline is suggested for if and when multiple comparison adjustment is justified.
