Abstract:

Capture-recapture experiments are frequently used to estimate the population size of a species. The traditional approach used for this estimation does not incorporate spatio-temporal information. As it is often the case that traps are spread out across a geographical area, the addition of spatio-temporal information can prove valuable. A method for incorporating this through the use of covariates is investigated and is compared to the standard approach. Methods for constructing confidence intervals are also considered and the coverage accuracy of these intervals is assessed through Monte Carlo simulation. The method is applied to a dataset involving small mammals.
